Family Devotions for Boys
We love reading great devotional books together as a family at night. I'm always on the lookout for good books that we can go through with our boys for our evening devotions.
Several years ago, Created for Work by Bob Schultz was recommended to me by a fellow homeschool mom as a good read-aloud book to do with boys. My boys at the time were only 6 & 7 years old. We tried reading a few chapters together but soon stopped.
The chapters were so good and meaty, filled with wonderful nuggets of wisdom from a man who poured out the lessons that God had taught him through the years onto the pages,–yet I had to stop. I knew I wanted my boys to be at an age where they could retain these wonderful life lessons before we continued with reading it.
So fast-forward to this past September, I saw the books on the shelf and realized my older boys were ready. I set out Created for Work on the coffee table at devotion time. As we began to read the first chapter, my hubby instantly fell in love with the book just as I had five years ago.
Each night we've read a chapter and discussed the questions at the end, along with any other key points we wanted the boys to consider. As we neared the end of Created for Work, I decided we needed to buy Mr. Schultz's other two books on boyhood: Boyhood and Beyond and Practical Happiness.
Now, all these months later, we are on our last book and only have a few chapters to go. Oh, how I wished there were more books for us to continue with by Bob Schultz. I looked him up and was sad to learn that he had passed away in 2008. However, the article I read said that there is a fourth book that was published posthumously in 2011. It's called Everyday Battles: Knowing God Through Our Daily Conflicts. I had no idea there was another book! I just bought it! It's temporarily out-of-stock, but it will ship as soon as it's back in stock. I can't wait!
As sad as I am that he has passed away, I thought about the beautiful legacy he left for his daughters and their children. His life and so much of what God taught him are poured out in the pages of his books for generations of his family to see — and ours!
If you have boys, these four books are a must to add to your library. As for age to start reading it, it probably depends on your child. Preteens and teenagers are most likely going to get the most out of the book. However, our six-year-old has sat in on our devotions each night and seems to be picking up on many of the lessons in the stories. We will read it again with him (& his sisters) in a few years.
Really, these books are incredible for anyone — boys or girls & young or old!
I hope you check out these books and enjoy them as a family. They will truly bless you!
We finished all the amazing Bob Schultz books. They were all so good. We just started a new series called, The Gospels by Drive Thru History. We are really enjoying it. It's a video-based series. We watch the video together as a family, then read from the booklet that comes with the DVDs. I recently had the opportunity to interview Dave Stotts, the star of Drive Thru History. It was so fun getting to hear about how they made this series…and hearing about some of his favorite spots to film. We've been fans of Drive Thru History for years. This new series is our new favorite.
